How does glutathione work on the skin?

When applied to the skin, glutathione is soaked up and transported deep within our skin where it acts as an antioxidant, evening out skin tone, minimizing the look of environmental damage and lessening the appearance of wrinkles and discoloration. It will not penetrate into deeper layers or be transferred into the blood. It offers outer health with beauty benefits, while Immunocal helps glutathione production within your body, offering inner health benefits.

Dr. Prussick's Skin Care Tips

Dr. Prussick is an expert in immunodermatology and a member of the Immunotec Scientific Advisory Board. In addition, Dr. Prussick is Assistant Clinical Professor at George Washington University and the Medical Director at The Washington Dermatology Center.

Healthy lifestyle

The skin is the largest organ in your body. As with any other living tissue, it requires the proper nutrients to function optimally. Skin cells get needed energy and other "building blocks" from the food you eat. A diet consisting of protein, healthy fats and minerals will keep the skin looking its best. Immunocal will ensure that you are receiving all the essential amino acids you need.

Exercise improves blood flow and circulation to the skin tissues. This results in more oxygen flowing into the tissues and more efficient removal of toxic byproducts out of the skin. Excess alcohol drinking will cause dehydration of the skin. Cigarette smoking is very damaging to the skin, depleting antioxidants, reducing oxygen flow and increasing collagen breakdown resulting in skin wrinkling. Avoiding sugars and high fructose corn syrup is also important. Sugar causes glycosylation of both the collagen and elastic tissues, which results in wrinkling and easy bruising.

Hydrating your skin

As with all the cells in your body, the skin is made mostly of water. If a person becomes dehydrated, the cells will not function optimally and the skin will become dry and damaged. This is why drinking eight full glasses of purified water daily is optimal.

How to apply moisturizer?

Skin creams should be applied with a light touch. I prefer people apply with just their middle finger in light strokes to cover the face. Facial moisturizers should be applied up to the cheekbone area, avoiding the eyelids. A pea-sized amount is enough for each half of the face. Only specific eye creams should be applied to the lower eyelid and the delicate skin around the eye. No cream should be applied to the upper eyelid.

Importance of facial cleansing

The purpose of cleansing is to remove oil, bacteria, sweat, dirt, and dead skin cells from the face. If this is not done daily, the skin can become irritated or acne-prone. The choice of cleanser depends on your skin type. Oily skin benefits from foaming cleansers that remove unwanted oils/lipids from the skin. Those with dry skin need a mild cleanser that adds lipids and moisturizers back to the skin. People may have to change cleansers in different seasons, as their skin may need different products.

What happens to the skin when it ages?

The skin ages two ways: intrinsically and extrinsically. Intrinsic aging is caused by the generation of free radicals (oxidation) as each cell generates energy. Extrinsic aging is even more damaging and is caused by ultraviolet and infrared radiation, environmental toxins, cigarette smoke and pollution. This results in depletion of natural antioxidants like glutathione, damage to cell walls and your DNA. With age and ultraviolet exposure, there is an increase of abnormal enzymes that damage collagen and elastic tissue. Increased melanin production due to elevated tyrosinase enzyme causes brown spots.

As a person ages, their cells have a reduced ability to repair damage and build more collagen and elastic tissue. This results in blotchy pigmentation, wrinkles and saggy skin. The immune system becomes less efficient at removing potentially cancerous cells that have DNA damage. Again, the importance of glutathione in most of these processes cannot be underemphasized.

Tips for the skin in winter weather

Winter causes many skin issues. Indoor heaters reduce the humidity of the air. This causes the skin to lose water into the dry air, resulting in dry and itchy skin. To counter this problem, one may have to cleanse once daily instead of twice daily, use cooler water and moisturize more frequently. Some people change products in the winter months, using a less foaming cleanser and/or a thicker more hydrating moisturizer than they use at other times.

Do I need a night cream/eye cream if I'm a Millennial?

Yes, definitely. Even younger people need to be proactive in skin care. I think of it as "preventative medicine". All skin types eventually age by developing winkles and blotchy pigmented skin. The skin around the eye is the thinnest, so it will be the first to show signs of aging. This is why a good skin care line designed to repair damage from exposure to ultraviolet rays and other toxins will not only keep the skin healthy but also prevent and minimize the future evidence of aging.

What is the role of an anti-aging serum?

As the skin ages, it develops wrinkles due to loss and lack of new production of collagen and elastic tissue in the dermis. The purpose of the anti-aging serum is to counteract these changes. With the use of peptides, the fibroblasts in the dermis will renew the look of the skin. The addition of anti-inflammatory oils will also help smooth and firm the skin's appearance. These have been incorporated into the Elasense products.

The difference between UVA and UVB protection

Ultraviolet rays are divided into UVA and UVB, depending on their wavelength. The longer waves are UVA and these contribute to signs of aging such as brown spots, wrinkles and skin cancer. These waves pass through clouds and glass, which is why you need to wear sunblock even when driving or on cloudy/rainy days. UVB rays are the cause of sunburns and skin cancer. The SPF rating refers to how much UVB, but not UVA, coverage is provided. For example, a SPF of 15 means you can expose the skin 15 times longer before sunburn occurs. No UVA protection is indicated.

Why do we need a sunscreen? What is "broad spectrum"?

Ultraviolet radiation is the most important cause of both aging skin and skin cancer formation. The best way to prevent this damage is to wear ultraviolet sun protection every day. Broad spectrum sunscreens refer to products that block both UVA and UVB rays. Some products say that they block UVA/UVB but rarely do so completely. Low quality sunscreens often allow ultraviolet rays to pass through them, especially the UVA rays, so sun damage will still occur. This is why simply looking at the SPF rating on the product is not enough; it only indicates UVB protection levels. One needs to know whether the product completely blocks the UVA rays.

What is the role of antioxidants in the skin?

Oxygen free radicals (oxidative stress) are a major source of damage to the inside and outside of skin cells, which can lead to aging of the skin and even skin cancer. Environmental pollution, toxins, ultraviolet and infrared radiation also cause inflammation and damage. Antioxidants protect the inside and outside skin layers from all these environmental insults. Over time these antioxidants get depleted and have to be renewed. Antioxidants in skin creams can also act to preserve other antioxidants that can be unstable to air or light. Premium skin care products use multiple antioxidants that work in different ways both inside and outside skin cells to complement each other. As you may know, glutathione serves as the "master" antioxidant recharging all other antioxidants.

What's the difference between "tightening" and "drying"?

After face washing with hot water or strong soaps, the skin may feel dry and tight. This is a temporary feeling. However, the skin may also start to flake and peel. This is not an optimal reaction and one must use cooler water and a more gentle cleanser to avoid this. Some people need to reduce facial cleansing from twice to once daily. Applying a moisturizer immediately after cleansing can reduce the drying feeling.

Premium skin care products can slowly cause a tighter, more "lifted" look to the skin. This results in the cheeks and eyelids looking less saggy. This beneficial response should be achieved without products causing excessive flaking and scaling of the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do your products contain soy?
This product line does not use soy.
Are your products "alcohol free"?
The products are not alcohol free.
Are your products allergen free?
Yes. Our products are tested to be hypoallergenic and irritant free.
Are pesticides used in the ingredients?
No. We do not use pesticides in our ingredients.
Are there ingredients that are not included on the packaging?
All ingredients are listed on the packaging.
What is the source of glutathione in the antioxidant blend?
Sources may vary according to availability. Immunotec always demands the highest standards of quality when resourcing ingredients.
How does glutathione work with the skin?
Glutathione is your body's most important antioxidant. It helps to even skin tone and reduce appearance of dark spots.
The glutathione in the antioxidant complex - is it Immunocal or is it cysteine?
The glutathione added is pure glutathione itself. Immunocal or cysteine are not used here.
Why does glutathione work on the skin but not when it is ingested?
When you eat glutathione, it gets broken down in your digestive track and therefore does not get to the rest of your body. However since there are no digestive juices or enzymes on your skin, when applied topically glutathione will get absorbed directly into the skin. This is a strictly localized effect and will not go beyond the skin.
Should we be concerned about the preservative Phenoxyethanol? It scores higher on the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) scale at "4".
Elasense uses this preservative in very low concentrations to minimize the risk of irritation to the skin. When used in higher concentrations, it can irritate the skin, which is why the EWG score is listed as a 4.
Can you please explain the rationale behind the antioxidant blend?
SynerG4 is an exclusive Antioxidant Complex comprised of 4 powerful ingredients: the master antioxidant Glutathione, Green Tea, Acai and Cactus extracts, that work synergistically to produce amazing results.

Is the Elasense skin care line non-comedogenic (does not block pores)?
All of the products from the Elasense skin care collection are non comedogenic, which means they do not contain ingredients that are known to clog pores. The Elasense products are also paraben free. Parabens are widely used as preservatives in cosmetics and pharmaceutical products, although there have been growing concerns over the years regarding their safety.
Are the products "natural"?
While Immunotec relies heavily on natural products in this line, it cannot strictly be considered as "all natural". In addition, the Immunotec development team ensured that even the non-natural ingredients have low toxicity and concentrations.

No. While the products are made up mostly of natural ingredients, they cannot be classified as "all natural" or organic.
What preservatives do you use?
Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol.
Do your products expire?
Our products are designed to have a 2 year (24 month) shelf life.
You mentioned this is a line geared towards "anti aging". Is it appropriate for all skin types?
The ingredients were selected for their broad spectrum appeal and versatility. There is a "daily use" set that includes a facial wash, day moisturizer and night cream that are good for all ages and skin types, and two "anti-aging" products in the form of a face serum and eye cream for those interested in addressing specific skin aging concerns like fine lines and wrinkles and discoloration.
Is your packaging recyclable?
Yes. Our components and outer packaging use materials that can be recycled.
Is it possible to make the line all natural? Why are we not using all natural ingredients?
There are a few components in the formulae that cannot be defined as strictly "natural". Can the Elasense products be used if I have a skin condition like psoriasis, rosacea, eczema, dermatitis, acne or other problem?
Individuals with pre-existing skin problems should test the product on a small area away from the center of the face (for example, in front of the ear) for 2 or 3 days. If there is irritation afterwards, the product should be discontinued. For the majority of people with mild pre-existing conditions, the products will prove to be well tolerated. These products are not intended to treat or prevent any medical diagnosis. They are not intended to replace any of your current treatments. If an adverse reaction occurs, stop the product. If the problem persists, see your medical advisor.
I have acne. Will these products help my acne?
This line is not designed specifically for addressing acne issues.
Do I have to use all 5 products in the line?
Though we recommend using all 5 products, they are also sold individually.
Does the order I use the products in matter?
For best results, we suggest that you use the products in the order recommended: Cleanse, tone and remove impurities (3 in 1 Facial Wash), Treat (Triple Action Eye Cream and Age Defying Serum) and Moisturize (Protective Day Moisturizer and Rejuvenating Night Cream).
Can I use these products on my chest/décolletage area?
I have dry skin, and am noticing flaking when using the suggested routine (Cleanse, Serum, Day Cream). What should I do?
Some people experience dry skin, especially during the cold, dry winter months. For those with these concerns, we suggest the following change to the morning routine, as suggested by Dr. Prussick: 1) Rinse your face with warm water with no Cleanser, and only use the Cleanser in the evening 2) Apply the Day Moisturizer before applying the Serum 3) Apply the Serum on top of the Day Moisturizer 4) If skin still feels dry, apply a small amount of Night Cream on top of Day Moisturizer, before applying the Serum.
What is the difference between the Skin Perfecting Cream and the Elasense Moisturizers?
The Skin Perfecting Cream is made with Immunocal and it represents an alternative to the day cream for individuals that would need a higher moisturizing effect.  The Elasense Moisturizers contain SynerG4 complex, including Glutathione, and are suitable for all skin types. They are part of a 5 product collection that when used together, deliver anti-aging benefits.
I use the Skin Perfecting Cream now. How do I use it in conjunction with Elasense skin care?
The Skin Perfecting Cream provides powerful ingredients to nourish, moisturize and protect your skin. We recommend to continue using the Skin Perfecting Cream to areas of the skin that require deep moisturization or special attention as your final step, on top of the Elasense moisturizers. As well, the Skin Perfecting Cream can be used as a mask at night for a deep moisture treatment after washing with the Elasense 3 in 1 Facial Wash. Just apply a liberal amount to your face, let it set for 10-12 minutes, and then gently wash it off with lukewarm water. After the mask, use the Elasense Age Defying Serum, Triple Action Eye Cream, and Rejuvenating Night Cream to complete your routine.

Sodium Hydroxide
Used to control the pH of skin care products.
Sodium PCA
Sodium salt of pyroglutamic acid, commonly called "Natural Moisturizing Factor" or NMF that is found in all living cells. Acts as a humectant to help maintain the moisture balance of the skin.
A substance that can dissolve another substance to form a solution.
Surfactants degrease and emulsify oils and fats and suspend soil, allowing them to be washed away. Surfactants are used in most forms of cleansers and many are considered gentle and effective for most skin types.

Tapioca Starch
Viscosity agent.
Tocopherol, or vitamin E, a fat-soluble vitamin, is a naturally occurring antioxidant which can be isolated from vegetable oil. Augments the sunscreen effect, strengthens the skin's barrier function. Protects the outer lipid layers of the cell.
A chemical compound formed from glycerol combined with three fatty acids. It is a constituent of natural fats and oils.

UV Protection
To be truly effective and beneficial for skin, sunscreens must protect skin from both the sun's UVA and UVB radiation. While UVA radiation does not produce any visible short-term evidence of skin damage, it creates serious cumulative changes in skin such as inflammation, abnormal cell production, thickening of the stratum corneum (outer layer of skin), depletion of immune-stimulating cells, and evidence of the possibility of elastin deterioration. UVB radiation causes sunburn. The SPF in a sunscreen describes how long the skin will take to burn when wearing the SPF i.e. SPF 15 means it will take 15 times longer to get a sunburn.

Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract
Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, blueberry extract protects the skin's moisture barrier. Helps the skin feels softer and refreshed.
Viscosity Control
The thickness or thinness (or stickiness) of a product and/or substance. If a substance has low viscosity, it tends to flow more easily (it is thinner); a high viscosity substance is less fluid (thicker).

Waltheria Indica Leaf Extract
Skin brightening agent.

Xanthan Gum
Substance that increases the thickness of the aqueous (water) portion of cosmetic products.

Zinc Oxide
A key ingredient in sunscreen formulations, offers broad spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays, reflects UV light instead of absorbing them, which keeps the skin feeling cooler.
